Short Story Structure

I’m curious about short story structure, and I’m starting my research by checking out some articles I’ve found online. First up: The Structure of a Short Story, by James R. Hull. James likens the story to the process of problem solving, and makes an analogy comparing key story elements (ex. character) to key aspects of our minds (ex. motivations). He finishes by suggesting that short stories are successful when they paint a complete enough picture for the reader to fill in the gaps, but just barely. My Writer’s Journey

I’ve been writing for a good while, but I want to explore the craft and expand my skills. At the advice of a good friend, I’m going to blog about my writer’s journey and about what I learn. One area I’ve not played with much, is writing shorts. I certainly read less shorts than novels, but I’m a huge fan of comics and graphic novels. Finished Graphic Novel ALPHA!!!

I just finished writing and designing issue four of the graphic novel ALPHA! I’m quite excited, and tired. The fourth and final issue is 30 pages, bringing the total page length of the graphic novel to 108 pages! It may get a few pages longer with titles and things in the collected edition, but in any case, it’s just as long as it needs to be. OK, now, I just need to find an artist…
